Apple updates the iMac, with 4th generation Intel quad-core processors, new graphics and more

Apple has announced an updated iMac, featuring “fourth generation Intel quad-core processors, new graphics, next generation Wi-Fi and faster PCIe flash storage options”.

“iMac continues to be the example that proves how beautiful, fast and fun a desktop computer can be,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “Inside its ultra-thin aluminum enclosure, the new iMac has the latest Intel processors, faster graphics, next generation 802.11ac Wi-Fi and faster PCIe flash storage.”

The entry-level 21.5-inch incarnation now sports a 2.7 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor, in addition to new Iris Pro graphics. Moreover, the higher-end 21.5-inch model, as well as both 27-inch models, feature quad-core Intel Core i5 processors that operate up to 3.4 GHz. They also feature NVIDIA GeForce 700 series graphics.

The iMacs also now support 802.11ac WiFi, which is basically a supercharged version of the preceding 802.11n, which is the current WiFi standard. Apple claims that when connected to an 802.11ac base station, iMacs can deliver up to three times faster wireless Internet.

In terms of availability and pricing, the new iMac will go on sale today through Apple’s online store, as well as in its bricks-and-mortar stores and third-party authorized resellers.
